By-Laws
1.0 Membership
Chair of the Membership Committee: Ethan
i) Membership is open only to those bearing the Markham name;
a) methods include that of birth, adoption and legally binding
marriage
b) common law relationships are not considered binding
c) if spouse fails to honour the Markham name, he/she forfeits
the right to become a participating member
d) hyphenation of surnames is not permitted
e) divorce from a Markham also forfeits all rights to participate
ii) All prospective participants must pass skill testing questions
prepared by the Chair in consultation with the Board of Directors at
the time of application;
a) cheating on test results in a failure and may not re-apply for
one year, asking ones father for help is considered cheating
iii) Newly appointed members must read and abide by all of The
Markham Cup By-Laws
2.0 Drafting
Chair of the Drafting Committee: Ethan
i) The date of the draft will attempt to accommodate all schedules, but
a final decision will be made by the Chair in consultation with the
Board of Directors;
a) schedules must be submitted to the Chair no later than three
weeks before the first playoff game
b) date and time will be decided by the Chair for all members
no later than two weeks before the first game of the playoffs
c) the date of the draft must take place within one week
previous of the first day of playoffs
ii) The method of the draft will be made by the Chair in consultation
with the Board of Directors within three weeks of the first day of
playoffs;
a) once decided it is up to the individual member to access
that particular method on draft day
b) inability to make the arrangements results in the individual
paying the long distance charges to a member who is able
to access method
c) time between rounds is subject to method, but chair has
ability to cancel ones pick if it is viewed that enough time
has been given
iii) The draft order will be decided through a tabulated spreadsheet by
the Chair;
a) picking of the number for spreadsheet is the responsibility of
lowest
finishing member from previous years results, who is
not the Chair
iv) The number of players chosen is 1 goaltending team, 6
defencemen,
and 13 forwards;
a) positions of players can be taken in any order
b) the draft will take the form of an S-curve
3.0 Scoring
Chair of the Scoring Committee: Josh
i) Scoring will be kept by the Chair, with the Toronto Star being the
official results;
ii) One point is given to players for a goal or assist, and to a team for a
win;
iii) An additional three points are given to a team for a shutout;
4.0 Tie-Breaker
i) If at the end of the playoffs two members are tied in total points the
championship
will go to the one between them who attained the
most
points in the final round, retreating as many rounds as
necessary
till a winner is declared;
5.0 Player
Replacement
Chair of the Player Replacement Committee: Drew
i) If a player drafted is injured or becomes injured before the first
game
of the playoffs there may be a replacement player chosen;
a) the order in which replacement players may be chosen is on
a first come first serve basis, reported to the Chair
b) the Chair has final say, and will inform others of injuries
and replacement players
c) injuries does not include that of drafted players whose
teams do not make the playoffs
6.0 Amendments
i) Amendments to the constitution can be made only in the years of
expansion;
7.0 Appeals
Chair of the Appeals Committee: Asher
i) Appeals can be presented to the Chair for review at any time they
feel
they have been treated unjustly;
a) the Chair in consultation with the Board of Directors must
respond
to the appeal within forty-eight hours
8.0 Champion
i) The Markham Cup Champion will be recognized no earlier than the
moment when the Stanley Cup is presented to the winning franchise;
a) the previous years Champion and newly crowned
Champion must arrange for a safe exchange of the Cup at
the earliest time possible
b) failure to relinquish the Cup by the previous Champion at
this time will result in disciplinary actions from the Board of
Directors
c) engraving of the Cup is the responsibility of the New
Champion
d) the Cup is in the responsibility of the Champion for the
entire year and must be treated with the most care possible,
failure to do so will result in the Cup being placed in a
neutral site
